Stool (Parasitology)

Caution!

  • The liquid in the container may be harmful, as it contains formaldehyde, which is a suspected carciogen.

  • DO NOT remove the preservative from the container. Keep the container upright to prevent spillage of contents.

  • Keep out of the reach of children. If the chemical preservative in the container is splashed or spilled, refer to first aid measures listed below.

  • Do not use laxatives, barium, bismuth or mineral oil, as these substances may interfer with the detection of intestinal parasites.

  • It is very important that the water or urine does not come into contact with the stool. The stool may be collected in a clean dry container, or by using plastic wrap (e.g. Saran or any other brand) by stretching it over the toilet.

Step 1
Collect a sample or stool up to the fill line. If the stool is liquid collect about 1 oz (25 ml). Especially any area that is mucoid or bloody. Tighten cap securely and mix specimen thoroughly.

Step 2
Label specimen container with your full name, MCP, date and time, of collection.

Step 3
Bring specimen to the WMH Laboratory as soon as possible.

Step 4
Two stool samples from separate bowel movements 24 hours apart are usually collected. However, your doctor may instruct you otherwise.

Step 5
For sanitary and safety reasons, the container(s) must be enclosed in a biohazard bag.
