Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI uses Radio frequency waves (sound waves) that when sent into the body, create a signal that is emitted from the body. A system of receivers and magnets use the signal emitted to create an image on the computer. There is no radiation produced for an MRI examination. MRIs are useful for detecting tumors, especially in the brain's spinal column, studying body chemistry and functions and imaging soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons or arteries.

• An appointment is required and will be made through your specialist’s office.
• The MRI scheduling office will call you to conduct an interview and to complete a questionnaire before booking your appointment. The MRI scheduling office will provide you with any instructions that may be necessary for your examination.
• If you are claustrophobic, please discuss this with your specialist before the appointment is made.
• Most tests can take up to one hour or more to complete.
• The images are very sensitive to motion; therefore you will need to remain as still as possible.
