Western Health would like to announce that its new CT scanner is operational at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville. The Toshiba 64 multi slice scanner is considered to be a state of the art diagnostic tool.

“CT scanning allows for the non-invasive imaging and diagnosis of a wide range of conditions in less time and with greater comfort to our patients”, said Dr. Ed Mercer, Regional Chief of Medical Imaging for Western Health.

The CT scan will provide support to emergency, acute, trauma and other health services and will assist doctors to provide more effective treatment and diagnosis to their patients.

As one of the most advanced diagnostic tools available, the multi slice CT is the primary digital technique for imaging the chest, lungs, abdomen, and bones due to its ability to combine fast data acquisition with high resolution for the early diagnosis and treatment of serious illnesses and/or injury.

“The acquisition and delivery of this diagnostic tool is a tremendous benefit to the people of the Stephenville, Bay St. George area and the entire Western region”, said Dr. Ken Jenkins, Vice President of Medical Services.

Western Health purchased the equipment through its capital equipment process and funds provided by the Department of Health and Community Services and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in Budget 07. The total capital investment was $1.5 million.

The CT scanner will operate Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.
