Regional Library Services
Welcome to the Health Sciences Library of NLHS Western zone. Our collection is a comprehensive and current resource for the health care professionals of the Western zone to support their commitment to excellence in care, continuing education and knowledge transfer of new and relevant best practices.
The Library Services mission is to provide timely and accurate library service by planning, maintaining and delivering the highest quality information and resources to support the information needs of Western Health and its affiliates.
Library Services
Professional librarians find evidence-based information and provide instruction in the use of health information databases. The librarian also performs literature searches, will advise on Internet resources related to a wide variety of health-related topics and will help you develop search strategies.
With access to advanced technologies we provide:
- Fast and economic delivery of documents as a participating Docline library
- An accurate, timely and comprehensive service
- Absolute confidentiality
Library Access
The library is open to all Western zone staff, health professionals and health care affiliated students
Monday to Friday (8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
These hours are subject to change during the summer and on holidays. Any changes to Library hours will be posted outside the Library.
Resources
At present we have approximately 2000 medical, nursing and allied health textbooks in our collection. We also have a consumer health collection of materials.
We are a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Knowledge Information Network, which provides us with access to electronic resources such as:
- Pubmed
- CINAHL
- Cochrane Collection
- StatRef
- Psychology and Behavioural Sciences
- Health Business Elite
- Full text of 1900 electronic journals
These resources are available on any computer on our network. For additional access please contact the Library staff for details.
We also provide access to a number of evidence based resources through our Intranet page including:

- Elsevier Clinical Skills
- E-Therapeutics
- Micromedex
Borrowers
Affiliated physicians and staff of Western zone, as well as the faculty and students of the Western Regional School of Nursing have full borrowing privileges. The Library does not extend borrowing privileges to the general public and patients.
Interlibrary Loans
Books and journal articles not available from Western Health Regional Library Services can be ordered from outside libraries. We can provide timely and economic delivery of documents as a participating Docline library.
