Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program

When you deliver your baby at Western Memorial Regional Hospital, your baby's hearing will be screened before you go home. This is done to identify hearing problems as early as possible.

During the hearing screening test, the nurse will use a handheld computer to measure your baby's inner ear response to sound, usually when your baby is asleep. The procedure is safe and does not hurt your baby, in fact he or she will likely sleep through it.

The nurse will tell you the results of the screening test. If there are any concerns with the results, your baby may requre a follow-up evaluation.
