Autism Intervention Services
What is Autism Intervention Services?
Children and youth diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may receive various interventions targeting the core features of ASD. Core features of ASD are deficits in social communication and the presence of restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviours and interests.
Types of Intervention
Recommended interventions are determined based on the needs of the child/youth and the priorities of the family. Interventions may include such programs as Applied Behavior Analysis - Parent Mediated Intervention (ABA-PMI), Intensive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Joint Attention Symbolic Play, Emotional Regulation (JASPER), JASPER Parent-Mediated Intervention (JASPER PMI), Behaviour Management, Children’s Friendship Program (Grades 2-6), Speech-Language Pathology services and/or Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS – age 14+). Depending on the recommended intervention, varying professionals may work with children and youth (e.g., Child Management Specialists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Behaviour Management Specialists, etc.)

Who Can Refer?
Self- referrals, or referrals from various professionals are accepted, with accompanying documentation of a confirmed diagnosis of ASD. Referrals are forwarded to the Regional Direct Home Services Clinical Leader who coordinates services in conjunction with other programs.
How long will I have to wait for my child/youth to receive services?
Intervention will begin as soon as possible. There may be wait times for services depending on the intervention that has been recommended.
How is the service delivered?
The method of service delivery depends on the intervention being provided. Services may occur in the home, in a health care facility or virtually. Frequency of visits will depend on the intervention provided and the needs of the child/youth and family. This will be discussed with the family prior to beginning services.
