The Acute Care Medicine Service provides both primary & secondary care services, General Practitioners & Medical Internist Specialists admit to this service.

The Medicine Program supports the care delivery model of Total Patient Care (TPC). The premise of TPC is that 1 RN/LPN provides total care for his/her own patient during their entire shift. This model of nursing allows consistent and holistic care for the patient while promoting autonomy for the care provider.

The Medicine Program's health care team consists of:

Each member has a specific role to play, but together they strive to provide health care excellence to each patient and family.

Western Memorial Regional Hospital

The Medicine Program has two In-Patient Units and 56 beds. The units are supported by a team of health care professionals who provide individualized care that includes regular interactions with family members and loved ones. The goal of the team is to assist each patient with their recovery and ensure a smooth transition home or to more suitable accommodations within our community.

The 56 Bed General Medicine Units focuses on diagnosing and caring for patients with:

  • Cardiology (heart)
  • Respiratory (lung)
  • Gastroenterology (digestive system)
  • Nephrology (kidney)
  • Neurology (brain)
  • Endocrinology (glands ie. pancreas-diabetes)
  • Infectious conditions

The 28 bed general medicine unit (3A) specializes in cardiac care with a formalized cardiac rehabilitation program.

The 28 bed general medicine unit (3B) specializes in in-patient chemotherapy and patients with neurological disorders such as stroke. There is an 8 bed Regional Stroke Unit included on this floor. A specialized team cares for these patients during their acute and intermediate phase following their stroke (generally for 1-5 days).

Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital

Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, a 23 bed unit, provides the following services:

  • General Medicine
  • Palliative Care.
