Western Health Advises of Health Canada Alert Regarding Inferior Vena Cava Filters

Dec 15, 2016

Western Health is currently notifying patients who may be affected by a Health Canada alert regarding Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filters.  The alert refers to possible complications associated with devices implanted between 2003 and 2016. It is important to note that the complications are rare, and Western Health is not aware of any serious complications associated with these IVC filters among patients under its care.

Following the guidelines provided by Health Canada, Western Health has identified the patients who have had this medical device implanted and has reviewed each of the cases individually to determine the appropriate follow-up.  Western Health is in the process of contacting patients and their physicians to ensure they are aware of the alert and appropriate follow-up occurs. If patients do not have a family physician, Western Health will arrange for follow-up, as required.

This issue is not unique to Western Health. Hospitals across Canada and the United States are also informing patients.

Patients can contact their family physician or Western Health toll-free at (844) 443-5212 or (709) 784-6702 if they have questions or concerns. Western Health is committed to patient safety and will ensure that any patient concerns identified as a result of the Health Canada alert are addressed.
