Applications are invited for the position of Chief of Discipline, Children’s and Women’s Health (CCWH).   Reporting to the VP Medical Services, the CCWH is responsible for development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of high quality and patient centred services to women and children on a regional basis.  The CCHW provides guidance and support to all Obstetrician/Gynecologists and Pediatricians appointed to medical staff through various mechanisms including consultations with appropriate Chiefs of Staff, discipline meetings, and providing representation on RMAC.  The CCWH is also responsible for the management/supervision of approximately 8 medical staff members including salaried physicians at WMRH (Obstetrics/Gynecology and Pediatrics) as well as fee for service Obstetrician/Gynecologists and Pediatricians appointed to medical staff at WMRH.  Direct supervision/management for Obstetrician/Gynecologists and Pediatricians at other sites is provided by Chiefs of Staff (COS).

The CCWH takes a lead role in the development of regional standards of practice for Children’s and Women’s Health.  This includes holding Discipline Meetings on a regular basis and representing Children’s and Women’s Heath on an organizational level on appropriate committees and on RMAC.  The CCWH supports the COS’s with investigation of complaints and occurrences related to their discipline.  The Chief of Children’s and Women’s Health is actively involved in recruitment and retention of Obstetrician/Gynecologists and Pediatricians through participation in hiring, orientation and performance development.  The CCWH works with partners to ensure that appropriate level coverage is in place through development of on call rotas (Obstetrics/Gynecology and Pediatrics).

The incumbent will work directly with various VP’s and Directors, Chiefs of Staff, the VP and Regional Director of Medical Services in ensuring the effective organization, management and functioning of the medical staff within the Discipline of Children’s and Women’s Health.  Accountabilities include Medical Administration, Quality Initiatives, Resource Management, Planning, Communication and Leadership.  A detailed Position Description can be obtained from the Medical Services Office of Western Health. 

Qualifications Required: 

Duly registered Obstetrician/Gynecologist or Pediatrician with The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada eligible, preferably with post-grad qualifications in health care administrative studies or significant administrative experience. Familiarity with Western Health Bylaws, Policies and Procedures pertaining to Medical Staff is required.

The successful applicant must have the ability to compile and analyse statistical information related to medical staff issues, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and also have a proven track record within a regional health organization.  A demonstrated track record with the use of quality assurance, risk and utilization management is desired.  Strong organizational, financial management and decision-making skills are required. 

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to work with people in all departments of this large organization and our member organizations, and must be able to communicate effectively with external organizations.  A familiarization with computers and computer software including word processing, spread sheeting, and database applications in a business setting is required.

Remuneration:  TBA

Hours of Work:  25 hours per month
