Nutrition Services (In-patient)

Nutrition Services provides food services to patients, residents, families, visitors and staff. As well, dietitians provide clinical nutrition services to patients and residents. If you have any questions or concerns about the meal service or clinical needs, please contact the kitchen or dietitian, respectively.

Patient Food Services

Patient Food Services prepares three meals daily for patients. Some foods, such as juice, crackers, bread, cheese, and condiments, are in unit kitchens for patients.

Special diets are available for different medical conditions or chewing and swallowing concerns.

Long Term Care residents enjoy some Newfoundland traditional food on their menu.

Clinical Nutrition

Since good nutrition helps healing, clinical dietitians support patients to meet their nutrition needs. Sometimes medical conditions, such as cancer, make one need more energy and nutrients. Other conditions may require an increase or decrease of certain nutrients. For example, people with heart disease should decrease fat intake, while people with constipation require more fibre and fluid.

Clinical dietitians will discuss with patients their needs, the food they can and want to eat, and recommend special diets or supplements, if needed. Dietitians will also educate patients and their families about any dietary needs for home. People can meet with dietitians while in hospital or as outpatients.

Dietitians help long term care residents ensure good health by ensuring they can eat and enjoy meals to achieve good nutrition and maintain body weight.
