Mission: To protect children, to meet basic and developmental needs of Children, and support parents in their parenting role.
The mandate of the Child Youth and Family Services (CYFS) program is to ensure the protection of children at risk under the age of 16; provide care to children and youth who become wards of the Director of Child Youth and Family Services; assist with the preservation and strengthening of the family so children may remain at home or return home as quickly as possible; and to provide adoption services.
CYFS carries out its mandate through several areas including child protection services, residential services, family support services and adoption services.
Child protection services ensure the safety and well-being of children by investigating allegations of neglect and abuse and by providing services so that children can remain at home safely.
Family Support services are provided to help strengthen and improve a families function so families may care for their children at home as independently as possible. These services reduce the number of children who enter care.
Residential Services are provided in instances where children cannot be protected at home and require an out of home placement through the Child Youth and Family Services program. These services may include foster homes, group homes and individualized living arrangements for children or placement with significant others who are identified by the child or his or her family.
