The Regional Health Authorities in Newfoundland and Labrador are now in the process of contacting the next of kin of deceased patients whose estrogen and progesterone hormone receptor (ER/PR) tests were re-tested as part of the provincial breast cancer review.

Western Health Rolls Out Automated Chemistry System - 23/02/2010

Today, Western Health will begin using a totally automated chemistry system in the laboratory at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. The system, valued at $2.4 million, is the first in the province and will improve laboratory services for people in the region.

Temporary Visitation Restrictions Lifted at the Corner Brook Interfaith Home - 19/02/2010

People who have had vomiting and diarrhea or other flu like symptoms are asked to not to visit any of Western Health’s facilities. Individuals with any of these symptoms should rest at home, drink fluids, practice proper hand washing with hot water and soap, and if the symptoms persist contact their physician. It is extremely important that anyone exhibiting these symptoms not visit the sick or elderly until they have been symptom free for 48 hours.

Western Region Supports Home IV Chemotherapy Program - 09/01/2009

Since mid June 23rd, 2008, Western Health has been successful in implementing a Home IV Chemotherapy program for cancer patients who meet the eligibility criteria. Through the program, 13 patients in the Corner Brook, Pasadena, Deer Lake, Benoits Cove and Meadows area have been able to receive their chemotherapy treatment at home.

The Province Continues to Achieve Wait Times Success - 23/12/2008

The most recent quarterly wait time data shows that Newfoundland and Labrador continues to achieve the national benchmark timeframes in many of the five priority areas. The data from regional health authorities, released by the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Health and Community Services, represents the period from January 1 to March 31, 2008 and shows that the completed cases were concentrated in the 78 to 100 per cent range.

This week marks the annual recognition of Addictions Awareness Week. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Get up On It – Draw Your Own Conclusions.” This theme is meant to encourage youth in our communities to educate themselves about the realities and misconceptions of marijuana use.

Surgical Services Planning at Western Health - 21/07/2008

Western Health recently has been successful in recruiting additional health professionals for its surgical program. Those professionals will be in place in the fall and include an anesthetist, and an obstetrician/gynecologist for Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, a urologist and two anesthetists for Western Memorial Regional Hospital as well as additional nursing staff for both sites.

Western Health would like to advise that earlier today, Saturday, 31 May 2008 at 1:08 PM, a contractor working on the roof of Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook ignited some roofing material near an intake fan on the top of the building. This produced fumes and a strong smell of smoke on the fourth floor of the hospital. The Corner Brook Fire Department responded immediately.

Office Relocation Mental Health & Addictions, Corner Brook - 17/04/2008

Western Health would like to advise the public that the Hammond Building offices of the Mental Health and Addictions program will be closed on April 21 and 22, 2008.  This closure is due to the planned relocation of staff to new offices at 35 Boones Road, Corner Brook. Service provision will resume at 8:30 am April 23, 2008 from the Boones Road office site.

Wellness Enhancements in the Western Region - 24/07/2007

Western Health is working to increase opportunities to promote healthy living and to get communities and community groups more involved in their own health and wellness. Cara Welsh, Wellness Facilitator for Deer Lake/White Bay North will work with Western Health staff and community groups to support the key directions of the Provincial Wellness Plan to enhance health promotion. Strong links with the other health promotion staff such as regional nutritionists, parent and child health coordinators, reproductive health consultant, cervical screening coordinator, and the regional health educator will be important for the Wellness Facilitator.

Emergency First Responders Trained for Lapoile - 18/07/2007

Three individuals have been trained as Emergency First Responders as part of Western Health’s Primary Health Care Project in Port aux Basques. Delores Vautier, Tiffany Osmond and Cathy Chant successfully participated in a forty hour training program through the St. John Ambulance that certified them as Emergency First Responders.

Second Mumps Case Confirmed in Western Region - 03/07/2007

Western Health would like to advise the public of a second confirmed mumps case identified in the Stephenville area. The case identified is the child of the previously identified Mumps case. “Due to the nature of close household contact and the fact that the Mumps vaccine has a failure rate of about 5%, even with 2 doses, this is not entirely unexpected,” says Dr. Greg Mercer Medical Officer of Health for Western Health.
