Western Health is recognizing Mental Health Week, May 6-12, a week designated to celebrate mental health. The Canadian Mental Health Association began recognizing Mental Health week 62 years ago and this year will focus on youth mental health. It is estimated that 10-20% of Canadian youth aged 15 to 24 are affected by a mental illness or disorder. The goal of the week is to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and how to achieve it in our daily lives.

Western Health is advising Nurse Practitioner services on the Port au Port Peninsula will be at the Lourdes Clinic only until March 5. Nurse Practitioner appointments will be available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for DeGrau patients and Tuesday and Thursdays for Lourdes patients. Patient safety has been further enhanced with the accreditation of all of the province’s medical laboratories. These facilities have been assessed and granted four-year accreditation certificates by the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH). The Cameron Report on the Commission of Inquiry on Hormone Receptor Testing included the recommendation that all medical laboratories in the province be accredited.

Influenza has been confirmed in the Western region and is now on the increase across the country. The influenza vaccine continues to be available for those who are at risk of complications from this disease. If you have a chronic illness or are caring for someone with a chronic illness and you have not had your influenza vaccination, it is important to do so as soon as possible. It is especially important for healthcare workers to be vaccinated so that you protect yourself while at work and not risk spreading this disease to your family and patients.

Western Health is pleased to release the 2012 Healthy Aging Calendar that features twelve seniors from the Western region. Western Health staff members and community partners were asked to nominate people who they thought conveyed healthy aging through three categories: Participation, Ambition or Involvement. A senior was then chosen to be featured each month.

The holidays are a time when we hold more large family gatherings and buffets where foods can be left out for long periods that increases the risk of foodborne illness. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) describes the problems that can result from alcohol use during pregnancy. September 9th is designated international FASD Day to raise awareness about the impacts of drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Western Health reminds pregnant women that drinking alcohol during pregnancy puts the baby at risk of FASD and that no amount of alcohol is considered safe during any stage of pregnancy.
Western Health and the Bay St. George Community Advisory Committee are pleased to announce a new healthy living initiative, “Go Healthy,” to promote health and wellness in the area. The Emergency Medical Services Chiefs of Canada (EMSCC) presented David Buckle and Greg Hodder an award of excellence for the innovative technology used in ADAMS (Ambulance Dispatch and Management System). Buckle, Director of Paramedicine and Medical Transport, and Hodder, Regional Manager of Application Development and Support, created ADAMS to manage routine transfers of patients between facilities throughout the region.

Injuries related to motor vehicle collisions are the number one killer of Canadian children, according to 2006 statistics from Transport Canada. However, if kids were properly restrained in appropriate car seats, the number child deaths could be dramatically reduced. Each year, Johnson & Johnson and Safe Kids Canada join forces to run a national campaign in order raise awareness about a specific type of injury. This year, Safe Kids Week, May 30 to June 5, will focus on Child Passenger Safety.

Toys are regulated under the Hazardous Products Act by Health Canada and are banned if nose levels exceed 100 decibels. However, even at 100 decibels if children are playing with these toys for an extended period of time, sound levels can be damaging.
Please be advised that effective Saturday, May 14th, 2011, the visitation restrictions that were in place at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre will be lifted. The visitation restrictions had been in place due to an outbreak of influenza-like illness in the facility.
Western Health employees are being challenged to keep active through the “Walking Western for Wellness” challenge which will kick off today, on Canada Health Day and run until December 12, 2011. Participants will use Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador’s Small Steps . . . Big Results, a provincial physical activity website designed to motivate individuals to start moving towards a healthier and more active lifestyle.
Western Health is recognizing Canada Health Day by offering support to community groups and schools through healthy activity grants. This year’s theme “Celebrating Staying Healthy…Together” will be demonstrated through community walks, swimming and bowling parties, lifestyle clinics, education sessions and various healthy lifestyle activities throughout the region.

Western Health is recognizing Mental Health Week by engaging people to protect and preserve their mental health at home and in their communities. May 1 to 7 is a designated week to celebrate mental health and was created by the Canadian Mental Health Association 60 years ago. The theme of the week “Mental Health for All” represents the right of every Canadian to enjoy and have the best possible mental health. The goal of the week is to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and how to achieve it in our daily lives.
National Immunization Awareness Week highlights the importance of protecting the public from vaccine-preventable diseases and celebrates the achievement of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities. Immunization programs are among the most successful and cost-effective public health tools available for preventing disease and death. They not only help protect individuals, but also help protect entire communities by reducing the spread of infectious diseases.
Western Health staff formerly located at the Crewe Building in Port aux Basques will be moving to a new location over the next two days. The new location is 3 – 9 Barhaven Place, Port aux Basques.
The move should not have any affect on programs and services over the next few days. Telephone service will be transferred to the new offices and should not be disrupted.

Western Health is pleased to release a Healthy Aging Calendar for 2011 that features thirteen seniors from the western region. Western Health staff members were asked to nominate people who they thought conveyed healthy aging through three categories: Participation, Ambition or Involvement. From those nominees, a senior was chosen to be featured in each month and on the cover.
Western Health will be testing its emergency preparedness with an emergency exercise at Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre in Stephenville Crossing on Saturday, November 13th, 2010. This is the second exercise of this type in the past few weeks. The exercise is being conducted in co-operation with Barachois Search and Rescue and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Western Health will be testing its emergency preparedness with an emergency exercise at Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre in Channel-Port aux Basques on Tuesday, October 26th, 2010. The exercise is being conducted in co-operation with 103 Rescue Squadron, 9 Wing Gander.
Children and youth in the Deer Lake and White Bay area are invited to participate in a “Kids Live Well Marathon” this summer.
Western Health is celebrating Seniors Month with activities and events throughout the region during the month of June. Western Health and community groups have developed events and activities for seniors in their local area, to encourage them to take an active role in their health.
Western Health would like to remind the public about the Provincial Hearing Aid Program, which supplies hearing aids to all children with hearing loss and to hearing impaired adults, based upon financial assessment. An individual that purchases a hearing aid without having been assessed by an audiologist working in the provincial health care system may not have been informed of this program.
Immunization saves lives. A century ago, because of infectious disease, too many children never saw their fifth birthday. Today, almost all the same diseases exist, but we are protected by immunization. National Immunization Awareness Week in Canada is April 24 to May 1, 2010. Everyone – not just parents of small children – is encouraged to learn more about how to protect themselves against vaccine-preventable disease.
Western Health advises that there will be a gradual introduction of elective surgeries at Western Memorial Regional Hospital beginning March 26. Western Health has started contacting patients with appointments for their rescheduled surgeries.
Western Health announces the H1N1 immunization schedule for students in Grade 4 - Grade 6 in the Western region.
Western Health’s Flu Assessment Centre established at the former Regina High School will have a change in the hours of operation beginning on Monday, November 16th, 2009. The new hours of operation will be daily (Monday to Sunday) from 10 am to 10 pm.
Western Health will begin the distribution of the H1N1 vaccine in the Western region on Monday, October 26, 2009. The first group to receive the vaccine will be health and community services workers.
The four regional health authorities today released an update on the patient identification review for ER/PR testing. This review was conducted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information (NLCHI).
On May 12, 2009, Newfoundland and Labrador’s four Regional Health Authorities (RHA), Eastern Health, Western Health, Labrador-Grenfell Health and Central Health, will celebrate Canada Health Day by wearing blue ribbons. Blue is the common colour in the RHA logos and wearing the blue ribbons signifies that all employees working with the health authorities throughout the province are working hard to achieve the same vision – healthy people, healthy communities.

Western Health would like to advise that earlier today, Saturday, 31 May 2008 at 1:08 PM, a contractor working on the roof of Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook ignited some roofing material near an intake fan on the top of the building. This produced fumes and a strong smell of smoke on the fourth floor of the hospital. The Corner Brook Fire Department responded immediately.

Western Health would like to advise that visitation to the Long Term Care Unit at Sir Charles LeGrow Health Centre, Port aux Basques will be closed until further notice due to a spread of a gastro-intestinal illness, including vomiting and diarrhea.
Western Health is pleased to announce the relocation of it's Pollards Point Clinic into a newly renovated site located in the White Bay South Development Association Building.
Patients who require medical assistance of a non-emergency nature this afternoon in Corner Brook are asked to visit Western Memorial Health Clinic (former Canadian Tire Building, Herald Avenue) to have their medical needs met effective immediately. This would not include patients who have regular doctor’s appointments today or have a medical emergency.
Western Health would like to advise the public that the Interfaith Home, Memory Land and Newfoundland Units, has a visitor restriction in place due to a respiratory illness among the residents of those units. Visitor restrictions have been put in place as a precautionary measure. This action is being taken to prevent a further spread of this illness.
