Western Health is reducing elective health and community services that it provides in order to prepare for a strike by the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses Union on Wednesday, May 20th, 2009.

As a result, Western Health will be operating at a reduced capacity and several service changes will be implemented. All patients and clients who may be safely discharged from service will be released. Elective procedures including surgeries will be cancelled and clients will be contacted. Admissions and surgeries will be limited to emergencies only. As well, community health services will be reduced and new admissions to long term care will be provided on an emergency basis only. For specific details on service changes, please contact your local health facility, or your health care provider.

"We would ask for the public's patience and understanding as we implement our contingency plans", said Susan Gillam, Chief Executive Officer with Western Health.

Further updates concerning service reductions will be provided as additional information becomes available.
