Western Health Recognizes Seniors Month
Jun 20, 2016
Western Health joins the province in celebrating June as Seniors month with special events in communities and long term care homes throughout the region. Western Health acknowledges the difference seniors make to our communities and applauds their contributions.
As well this year, Western Health is unveiling senior friendly parking at hospitals, health centres and long term care homes throughout the region. Seniors parking is one way to recognize seniors may have differing levels of mobility.
“Western Health recognizes that creating senior friendly spaces is important to support healthy and active living for older adults,†said Kelli O’Brien, Vice-President of Long Term Care and Rural Health. “Creating an age friendly environment enables seniors to age actively and stay involved in their communities. Evidence indicates that in order to encourage healthy aging, we need to create physical spaces that enable seniors to remain active, live safely, and enjoy good health.†It is hoped that individuals recognize the intention of this initiative and leave the parking spaces free for seniors who may need them.
Special events for long term care residents include resident art shows, garden parties, special music, Mi’ Kmaq drummers, lobster boils and talent shows.
