Western Health has opened the first dedicated unit for Acute Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA) management in Newfoundland and Labrador on its 3B Medicine Ward at Western Memorial Regional Hospital (WMRH).

For some time, a Stroke Management Working Group has been examining opportunities for improvement in the management of patients admitted to Acute Care with a diagnosis of Stroke (CVA) and transient ischemic attack. Best practises across the country support the effectiveness of stroke unit care in improving outcomes, decreasing lengths of stay in hospital, reducing morbidity and mortality from stroke, and in optimizing resource utilization.

Dr. Minnie Wasmeier, Chief Operating Officer for Secondary Services, stated “The establishment of this dedicated unit speaks to Western Health's commitment to serve the people of this region by putting in place best practices recommended by its highly trained professionals."

After considerable research and consultation, the Stroke Team developed an education program for nursing staff involved in stroke care and involved all the disciplines who have a role to play in optimal care for the patient. 104 staff were trained throughout the region.

The Stroke Unit opened last month and to date there have been 9 stroke patients who have had their needs managed according to the best practice guidelines as set out by the Stroke Team.
