Western Health is pleased to announce two new appointments to the Provincial Cervical Screening Initiatives Program.

Dr. Susan King has accepted the position of Medical Director - Physician Lead for the program. Dr King provides representation for family physicians to have a voice in the development of an organized cervical cancer screening program for women of Newfoundland and Labrador. Dr King has been playing a critical role in the dissemination of new recommendations for practice as it pertains to the recent changes in Pap testing for family doctors.

Dr Paul Neil has also accepted the position of Medical Director - Laboratory Lead. Dr Neil has had a significant history in the development of organized cervical screening program since 1990. His current role will facilitate the continuous technological and quality improvements in cytology from a laboratory perspective.

These positions are temporary appointments.

The Provincial Cervical Screening program is a coordinated program that enhances collaboration with physicians and health care providers to increase screening of women and improve the overall management of women who have changes in cervical cells.

Women in Newfoundland and Labrador continue to be at greater risk for cervical cancer due to lower than average screening rates. The critical issue is that many women are not having regular Pap tests. Cervical cancer typically takes ten to fifteen years to develop and there are safe, effective interventions available. Deaths from this type of cancer can be prevented.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in this county, with 184 people dying each day. The Cervical Screening Initiatives Program encourages women living in this province to take care of their health and have a Pap test.
