There is an increasing awareness of the human impact on the environment and recognition of the need for reducing air and water pollution, preserving natural environments in an effort to tackle climate change. In light of this and in keeping with its vision of “healthy people, healthy communities”, Western Health recognizes the critical link between the physical and mental wellness of our region and the health and preservation of our natural environment.

"Staff and doctors have been very enthusiastic around the Green Team initiative and are constantly forwarding new ideas on how we can reduce not just recycle”, said Dr. Minnie Wasmeier, Chief Operating Officer for Secondary Services and tasked with helping to lead the Green Team.
In September, Western Health formed a Green Team made up of employees, managers, and physicians to examine current practices and look at ways to introduce more environmentally friendly initiatives into its workplaces. The Green Team is intended to provide leadership, support and direction to environmental awareness and responsible activism within Western Health. Since its first meeting the team has had tremendous response from employees across the region with enthusiasm and suggestions for greening our workplaces.
Some of the actions being taken so far include:
- Promotion of energy (energy reduction and system optimization) modifications, and introduction of newer and cleaner energy options and for future improvements within facilities throughout the Western Region.
- Development of any new facilities in the region are built and designed with care and concern for the environment. For example, the new Long Term Care facility in Corner Brook is anticipated to meet a silver certification performance level in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
- Promotion of healthier, more environmentally friendly workplaces.
- Measures to reduce hazardous materials such as purchasing only mercury free equipment and products when available.
- Maximizing and improving upon the reduction, reuse and recycling (3Rs) within our facilities so that the 3Rs become meaningful and practical solution to waste reduction and disposal for all staff and patrons at Western Health.
With these initiatives Western Health is committed to working with our communities in preserving our environment and making the western region a safer, healthier place to live.
