Addictions Awareness Week: November 14-20 - Nov 10, 2010

During Addictions Awareness week, November 14-20th, Mental and Addictions Services staff at Western Health are supporting events that will increase the awareness of addictions issues.  Funding has been granted to 19 community groups, agencies and schools throughout the region to host events that will deliver prevention messages.

“The events that are being held during Addictions Awareness Week will get youth participating actively in their communities,” says Michelle House, Western Health’s Vice President of Population Health. “Individuals, especially teens, who are involved in the communities they live in, are less likely to be involved with alcohol, drugs and gambling.” A variety of events such as free skates, lunch & learns, presentations for parents and youth, poster contests are happening throughout the week.

Community members are encouraged to participate in these activities and learn more about substance use and gambling.  For more information about Addictions Awareness Week Activities or how you can become involved, please contact your local Mental Health & Addiction Services Office or Cathy Wheeler-Walsh, Regional Addictions Prevention Consultant at 634-4506.

If you or someone you know may have a problem with alcohol, other drugs or gambling or you would like more information, please contact www.addictionhelpnl.ca or www.getuponit.ca or call the HealthLine at 1-888-709-2929.
