Western Health would like to advise the general public that beginning February 26, new X-ray equipment will be installed at Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders. The installation is expected to take two weeks to complete, during which time routine X-rays will not be performed.

The new equipment will be more user-friendly for staff and patients than the current fixed machine because the table lowers up and down to allow easy access for patients. “The new X-ray equipment will be an improvement over what we have at Rufus Guinchard now,” says Sheila Freake, Director of Medical Imaging at Western Health. “The new X-ray machine will allow us to work around the patient, especially one with mobility limitations.”

While there will be no routine X-rays performed at Rufus Guinchard during the installation, emergency x-rays will be performed using a portable X-ray unit. “Portable X-ray equipment has limitations compared to a fixed X-ray unit and we are restricted in the type of X-rays that can be done using this kind of equipment.” says Freake.

On Thursday, March 11th, the installation will be complete and the X-ray equipment is expected to be in full service. There will be no disruption to lab services at the health centre during this time.

While the new equipment is being installed, individuals requiring X-ray services or pre-admission x ray for surgery are asked to travel to the Bonne Bay Health Centre. Western Health would like to ask for the public’s co-operation as we move toward improving the X-ray services to the people of Port Saunders, and surrounding communities.

The total investment for this project is approximately $200,000.
