Western Health has just recently completed training and implementation of the patient safety program MORE OB for the Maternal Newborn Unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. The goal of the program is to reduce risks associated with labor and delivery. MORE-OB is based on the safety philosophy that focuses on improving systems and processes versus people in order to enhance safety.

A team of 30 nurses, obstetricians and managers from Western Health’s Maternal Newborn Unit enrolled in the program. The training includes team building exercises, workshops, skill and emergency drills and on-site safety assessments.

“Patient safety is a key priority for Western Health,” says Dr. Minnie Wasmeier, Chief Operating Officer of Secondary Services at Western Health. “The MORE OB program will help build a strong foundation for patient safety and quality improvement for the Maternal Newborn Unit, and our organization.” MORE OB is a three year performance improvement program for caregivers and administrators in hospital obstetrics units. The program integrates evidence-based standards and guidelines with proven safety concepts and aims to provide a standardized approach for the obstetrical team.

“Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently (MORE OB)” is an internationally recognized program and was developed by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada.

Each year, more than 650 babies are delivered at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Western Health is committed to ensuring that mothers and their newborn babies receive the best care possible.
