This year, Western Health will be joining the celebration of Canada Health Day by helping to organize community walks throughout the Western Region. The walks will take place on Friday, May 11, 2007 and Saturday, May 12th, 2007 at locations throughout the Western Region. Individuals, groups, and schools will join with Western Health staff for a walk to promote health and to celebrate Canada Health Day.
Canada Health Day 2007 is an opportunity to celebrate public health in our everyday lives. Annually, Canada Health Day is a national event that is celebrated on May 12th, the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.
For over 100 years, public health in Canada has been helping individuals take care of themselves, their families, and communities. The major advances in life expectancy, overall health and quality of life that occurred in the twentieth century were the result public health initiatives – providing vaccinations, clean water, pasteurization and better living conditions.
All of these initiatives were made with relatively small investments and have given us enormous returns. We have decreased suffering and costs due to illness, and the improvement of our society and economy because we have, relative to many other nations, a healthy population.
