H1N1

On June 11th, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated the status of the H1N1 influneza pandemic alarm from a Level 5 to a Level 6 - which means the world is now in the early stages of a global pandemic. On June 13th, the province confirmed the first case of H1N1 for the province. H1N1 Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory illness that causes symptoms similar to those of the regular human seasonal flu. The symptoms include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, coughing and sore throat.  Some people with H1N1 have also reported vomiting and diarrhea.

What can I do to protect myself from infection? 

The Public Health Agency of Canada advises Canadians to:

•    Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, or use hand sanitizer
•    Cough and sneeze in your sleeve or tissue
•    Get your annual flu shot
•    Keep doing what you normally do, but stay home if sick
•    Check www.fightflu.ca for more information
•    Talk to a health professional if you experience severe flu-like symptoms
