Corner Brook/Bay of Islands Area

The Primary Health Care area of Corner Brook-Bay of Islands is inclusive of the city of Corner Brook, the towns of Massey Drive, Gallants, and Steady Brook, and all communities within the north and south shores of the Bay of Islands. Communities along the north shore of the Bay of Islands include: Hughes Brook, Irishtown - Summerside, Meadows, Gilliams, McIvers and Cox's Cove. Communities along the south shore of the Bay of Islands include: Mt. Moriah, Benoit's Cove, Halfway Point, Frenchman's Cove, John's Beach, York Harbour and Lark Harbour. All communities within this Primary Health Care area are included in the Corner Brook - Rocky Harbour Rural Secretariat and the Humber Economic Development Board, Zone 8.

Corner Brook, being the largest municipality in this Primary Health Care area, is the regional center for services and businesses including Western Memorial Regional Hospital, a regional hospital for all residents of the western region. The distance between Corner Brook and the farthest community on the north shore of the Bay of Islands is 38.8 km whereas the distance between Corner Brook and the farthest community on the south shore of the Bay of Islands is 47 km. The majority of residents of this Primary Health Care area travel to Corner Brook for most of their service needs.

Primary Health Care is incorporated within the Corner Brook-Bay of Islands area through a Primary Health Care Management Team, a Community Advisory Committee, and various Working Groups committed to improving the health status of all residents in the area.

Primary Health Care Management Team
The Corner Brook-Bay of Islands Primary Health Care Management Team is comprised of Western Health Managers across program areas with responsibility for services within the geographic area of Corner Brook-Bay of Islands. This Management Team provides leadership and support for Primary Health Care in the area including health promotion initiatives to address the health concerns specific to the area.

Corner Brook-Bay of Islands Community Advisory Committee

The Corner Brook-Bay of Islands Community Advisory Committee (CAC) is the avenue within Primary Health Care for public participation and collaboration with community residents for their input into improving the health status of their communities and decisions about health care. The Corner Brook-Bay of Islands Community Advisory Committee provides an opportunity for community representatives to work with Primary Health Care teams to assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating initiatives to improve the overall health and well-being of the residents of Corner Brook-Bay of Islands area. The goals of the Corner Brook-Bay of Islands Community Advisory Committee are:
-  To support Western Health staff in improving health status of the area residents.
-  To identify opportunities for health and well-being initiatives based on identified community strengths and opportunities.
-  To participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of health and wellness activities.
-  To promote a population approach to health and wellness activities in their communities.

The Corner Brook-Bay of Islands Community Advisory Committee has partnered with Western Health staff to implement health promotion initiatives in the area of healthy eating, physical activity, and injury prevention.
